Specialized Holistic Education Program to Cultivate the Five Core Competencies of Korea University Sejong Campus

 

On June 10, the Awards Ceremony for the CB Program Competition and Research Presentation Contest for the First Semester of the 2026 Academic Year was held at the Nongshim International Building, hosted by the Office of Academic Affairs and organized by the Center for General Education of Korea University Sejong Campus.

The ceremony was organized to share the educational outcomes of the specialized CB (Capacity Building) Program and to disseminate the core competencies cultivated through extracurricular and experiential learning activities.

The CB Program Competition and Research Presentation Contest was conducted based on teaching and learning outcomes from the Creative Education Mentoring and Cultural Sensitivity Mentoring tracks. Students identified real-life problems and explored solutions through team-based activities, developing community-oriented competencies in the process of collaboration and communication.

The specific programs comprised the "Creative Makers Competition" and "The Chorus Choir Contest." The Creative Makers Competition drew 19 teams across four sections, of which six teams received awards, while The Chorus Choir Contest featured three teams across three sections, with all three teams receiving recognition.

The contest is closely aligned with the cultivation of the five core competencies that Korea University Sejong Campus strives to foster. In the Creative Education Mentoring track, problem-solving activities connected to everyday life yielded measurable gains in creative and practical competencies. In the Cultural Sensitivity Mentoring track, collective e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n and participation through choral performance deepened attitudes of sharing and cooperation as well as mutual empathy among participants.

The ceremony also carried significance in that it provided an opportunity to collectively reflect on the direction university education should take in an era of rapid AI proliferation. The importance of holistic education was underscored, one that cultivates not only technological proficiency but also the distinctly human capacities of community spirit, empathy and consideration for others, creative problem-solving, and self-e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n, in a balanced manner.

Professor Jang Minsu, Research Professor at the Center for General Education, stated, "The CB Program Competition and Research Presentation Contest aims to provide students with the opportunity to adapt to the university community, carry out team-based tasks through various CB programs, and develop self-e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n, consideration for others, empathy, and creative competencies in an integrated way."

Hong Yongseok, Director of the Center for General Education, remarked, "The CB Program is a representative holistic education program of Sejong Campus that must be sustained continuously in order to enhance students' character competencies and establish a systematic educational framework. It is important to support students in experiencing both quiet and active programs in a free and open atmosphere, and to help them cultivate practical moral character and bold creativity grounded in the insights and realizations gained through those activities. As the AI era advances, technology-centered education alone will no longer suffice for universities; a balanced educational framework grounded in holistic and character education is becoming ever more essential. Going forward, we will strive to ensure that the CB Program faithfully fulfills its educational role as a specialized holistic education program of Korea University Sejong Campus, and that its outcomes continue to be disseminated through relevant research."

The CB Program is a specialized elective general education course at Sejong Campus designed to help students develop community spirit, empathy and consideration for others, self-e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n, creative thinking, and problem-solving competencies in a balanced way through diverse experiential and collaboration-centered activities. The Center for General Education plans to continue strengthening the holistic education framework connecting curricular and extracurricular activities through the CB Program, and to steadily promote the values of holistic and character education that university education in the AI era should uphold.
