Strengthening Core Competencies for the Future through Education Linking Liberal Arts and Major Studies

 

On June 10, the 7th KUS Public Data Utilization and Data Analysis Competition was held at the Nongshim International Hall at Korea University Sejong Campus. The event was hosted by the Office of Academic Affairs and organized by the Center for General Education.

The competition was designed to provide students with an opportunity to collect and analyze public data based on their foundational coding skills, and to share the process of identifying and resolving problems derived from such analysis. Participants engaged directly in data-driven problem-solving, using the occasion to reflect on and verify their practical learning outcomes.

The KUS Public Data Utilization and Data Analysis Competition is an educational program that has been continuously developed in conjunction with the "Introduction to Digital Literacy" course offered by the Center for General Education. Leveraging this course as its foundation, the Center has organized the public data analysis competition every semester, supporting students in applying their knowledge of basic programming syntax and input/output libraries to real-world data analysis tasks.

This year's competition was conducted in a team-based format in which students carried out and presented the entire analytical workflow, from data collection and pre-processing to analysis and visualization. Through this process, students extended the foundational coding skills acquired in the course to analytical practice and project-based learning (PBL), and experienced a teaching and learning continuum that ultimately connects to competencies in artificial intelligence (AI) utilization.

Research Professor Jang Minsu of the Center for General Education remarked, "This competition serves as an educational arena in which students systematically experience the problem-solving process through project-based learning, grounded in their foundational coding competencies. In a transitional liberal arts curriculum that bridges basic coding and AI utilization, what matters most is not the acquisition of technology per se, but the establishment of a teaching and learning framework in which students understand and interpret data, and then think and express themselves on that basis."

Hong Yongseok, Director of the Center for General Education and Professor of Environmental Systems Engineering, stated, "The Public Data Utilization and Data Analysis Competition is a practical educational program through which students extend the foundational competencies acquired in their coursework to actual analysis and presentation. Liberal arts education must go beyond laying the groundwork for major-field study and function as a central domain for cultivating the core competencies demanded by the future, including data literacy and proficiency in AI utilization. The Center for General Education has continuously built a system for assessing students' data analysis and software application competencies through the competition, and for sharing learning outcomes. Going forward, we plan to strengthen the integration of liberal arts education with major-field studies and to continue advancing our educational model so that data analysis and AI utilization education can proceed in organic continuity."

"Introduction to Digital Literacy," a general education course offered since the first semester of the 2023 academic year, aims to foster understanding of algorithmic concepts through exposure to various programming languages and hands-on code implementation. Instruction covers Python concept learning and implementation, as well as group data analysis projects. The Public Data Utilization and Data Analysis Competition, which operates on this basis, has established itself as a flagship program for the dissemination of student achievement, deepening students' experience in data analysis and visualization and enhancing their practical problem-solving capabilities.
